HIVE in Sabah Education Roundtable

On the 12th of July 2023, HIVE coordinators were involved in a roundtable discussion of the education development of Sabah. The event was organized by the Malaysian Collective Impact Initiative (MCII) with the aim to provide a neutral platform to enrich the discussion on education and simultaneously open for collaborative partnerships with the 48 organizations involved. Attended by Mdm Lim Lai Poh, Mdm Josephine Lai, and Mdm Auzellea Kristin Mozihim, the roundtable presented data on the severity of several educational issues hampering the development of Sabah.

As a teacher-capacity-building platform, HIVE coordinators were involved in the discussions mainly providing tangible solutions that can be implemented in the near future. Among the ideas shared by our team are increasing student motivation, the application of STEM in learning, inclusive education, and our call for articles that amplify teachers’ sharing culture. HIVE also added that students’ motivation can be enhanced through workshops and exhibitions. Also, the application of STEM workshops for teachers, particularly primary school should be implemented. We highlighted that STEM education should be started from primary school. Finally, HIVE also proposed the importance to expose technology in education to teachers. Drawing examples on the RBT subject, where many teachers are lacking to teach coding, HIVE sees this as a possible gap where organizations can design interventions.
